MAT. 121: Modern College Mathematics II (Individualized)

1.Course Description: This course is designed to give students experience using counting techniques,
probability theory, statistical techniques, and number theory to solve problems.
Mat.121 may be used as a mathematics elective and may be taken before Mat. 120.
The prerequisite for this course is Mat.060: Developmental Mathematics or its equivalent.

2. Course Competencies: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  •  Use the concepts and theorems of elementary number theory to solve problems
  • Apply techniques and formulas to solve problems involving permutations and combinations               (counting techniques)
  • Use the definitions, axioms, and theorems of probability to solve problems
  • Use statistical measures, graphs, and normality to analyze a distribution

3. Required Textbook: Mathematical Ideas, 11th edition, by Miller / Heeren / Hornsby
                                   ( Chapters 5, 11, 12, and 13 )

4. Methods of Instruction: This course is conducted using individualized instruction
Students will proceed at their own pace to complete the Student Resource Guide (SRG) for
